This was never meant to be a thing.
Rothko Records was just the copyright line on Domes’ releases for the last year. The company existed simply to support our financial operation. Recently, though, I reflected on the likes of The Physics House Band and their artist-run label, Unearthly Vision. It’s a vehicle for their business interests but also offers super-fans a deep-dive into their aesthetic. I admire this.
Contemporary musicians need to empower themselves to build out their creative enterprise. Most independent artists I know are already self-funding and executing their own production, distribution, copywriting, PR and social media marketing anyway.
Starting a newsletter suggests our artistic venture is growing. In a modest sense, it is, with new recordings planned this year (Magnalith and other unnamed initiatives). In 2021, we would also love to distribute friends’ work—new and retrospective—on all platforms.
I look my collaborators and allies from the last decade or so as a collective. It’s an inclusive and accomplished group that should be celebrated. Rothko Records may now appear to be an independent label but is more about the curation of New Zealand artists of peripheral heavy genres and ambient moods.
